About the event

Combining the beautiful and spirited interplay of traditional instruments, Polytropos perform tunes and songs from Scotland, Ireland, France and Canada. Arranging the sounds of the fiddle, flute, guitar, Scottish smallpipes, mandolin, voice and Irish whistle in curious and adventurous ways, their diverse range of tunes will take the listener around the world of traditional music!

Kiwi multi-instrumentalists Oscar West and Rennie Pearson are the traditional music duo Polytropos. They are masterful, passionate players of Celtic music, arranged in an adventurous, conversational way. “Polytropos” comes from ancient Greek and appears hundreds of times in Homer’s Odyssey. It's many possible translations range from “much-travelled” to “many-faced” to “a thing of many twists and turns.” All of these connotations feel perfect to describe the music we seek to create: dynamic, much-wandering journeys through tunes songs and a musical tradition that had travelled half a world to reach us in New Zealand.
